South Coast Artists, Inc. is a non-profit community-based arts organization that hosts the summertime SCA Open Studios Tour in the towns of Dartmouth and Westport, Massachusetts; and Tiverton and Little Compton, Rhode Island. As part of our ongoing educational mission, a grant program was established in 2014 in memory of Poole Barker. Poole was a young, exhibiting member of SCA, she came from a family of artists and creators, and was a dedicated artist in her own right. A few years after her death, funds were given to SCA to develop a grant program to help other young artists with their creative pursuits. We hope that Poole’s spirit of creativity, joy and exploration will live on in these grants.
SCA grants are designed to encourage emerging young artists to explore their field of interest by helping cover the costs of art materials and supplies, art related travel, training, classes, apprenticeships, or other expenses toward the completion of a creative project or goal.
In 2024 we invite emerging young artists, between the ages of 16 and 21, who live or attend school in Bristol County, Massachusetts, or Newport County, Rhode Island, to apply for a grant in the amount of $1,000. Application period is from June 1st - December 15th, 2024.
Interested students must complete the form below including a description of their proposed art project or activity, and how the grant would be used to support the project. A recommendation from a teacher or mentor (non-family member) is required.
Grant recipients will be required to document their projects with a minimum of 4 photos as well as a written statement one page or more, summarizing their completed project experience; and must agree to allow photos to be used by SCA to publicize the results to its membership and communities. Applicants will be notified on or about January 15, 2025.
Please note, this is not a scholarship for existing tuition.
We are interested in funding specific artistic projects and/or goals developed by the applicant to help them expand, strengthen, or stretch their artistic knowledge.
