POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Summer Internship is an 8-week paid program offering a unique opportunity to high-potential college Juniors, who are interested in a career with a fast-paced, dynamic, luxury retail organization. The program builds cross-functional expertise and allows time to develop  functional, technical and leadership competencies. You will work with our buying and planning offices to learn key functional skills such as Retail Math, Pre-Market Preparation, systems training, market analysis and forecasting and relationship development with our stores and vendors. In addition to learning the key components of being a Merchant at Saks you will have the opportunity to meet with Senior Leadership from our Stores, Marketing, Merchant and Executive  teams. To maximize your learning the program is designed to provide you with experiences both on the job with your supervisor and in a classroom setting.* Curriculum is designed to  target both soft and hard skill learning such as basic retail language, retail math, interviewing skills and time management. 

*Remote learning and virtual on the job experience will be enforced for the Summer 2021 Internship Program and be subject to change.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Be given exposure to a specific corporate function, such as Merchandising, Marketing, Store Operations, Human Resources, or Finance -
  • Receive direct work experience and on-the-job training with key members of the business
  • Develop soft skills through classroom courses and workshops; skills include interviewing, resume writing, presentation, transitioning from an educational setting to a corporate setting, etc. 
  • Acquire business knowledge and develop business acumen through classroom courses, such as Finance 101 and Introduction to Retail 
  • Connect with peers through virtual team building sessions
  • Interact with executive leaders through group sessions
  • Build cross-functional expertise by completing an intern project
  • Develop functional, technical, and leadership capabilities
  • Learn and build skills, including business analysis, strategic planning, system training, problem solving, and relationship development with internal and external stakeholders 
  • Be part of an empowered, innovative team; work with an adventurous spirit and a customer-centric mindset; play a critical role in making decisions that will position us to win

REQUIREMENTS

  • Assist with the preseason and in season management of store inventories to ensure achievement of financial targets (sales, profit, inventory turn, GMROI)
  • Leverage both data and tangible feedback to determine ladder planning concept of key items in key markets
  • Collaborate with cross functional departments, ie. Marketing and Store Operations, to ensure success of product strategies and launches
  • Utilize data and store insights to uncover opportunities within the store fleet & provide key findings to merchant teams so they are actioned on
  • All level of by door analysis inclusive but not limited to:
    • By door sales plans
    • Allocation of buys
    • Pre-Season by door assortment planning
    • Store to store stock balancing
    • Sizing by door
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 2-3 years of experience in merchandising, buying, or planning
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to provide analysis related to driving the business
  • Excellent knowledge of retail math and cost accounting
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize
  • Possess strong communication skills and the ability to work both autonomously as well as within a team
