This CABLE Special Topics Training will discuss the impact of childhood trauma with a specific focus on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). ACEs are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood and are linked to adverse outcomes over the life course including physical health issues, mental illness, and substance use in adolescence and adulthood. The presentation will cover the following areas:

  • Defining adverse childhood events
  • The prevalence of ACES within the general population
  • The behavioral and physiological effects of trauma
  • How ACEs impact long-term physical and mental health
  • How the effects of ACEs can be identified and alleviated when responding to children and adults in crisis
  • Resources for families
