The Section on Early Career Physicians (SOECP) is pleased to welcome early career (EC) faculty leader applications for the 2023-2025 class of the Early Career Leadership Alliance (ECLA), a 2-year training program designed to develop leaders and build a leadership community amongst early career physicians. This learning program is intended to increase the capacity of physicians who are early in their career as a means to support their career growth as leaders. In alignment with the AAP Equity Agenda, there is a hope to facilitate equity in access to AAP leadership programs especially as those underrepresented in medicine may have less access to leadership training, with an aim to diversify leadership in pediatrics. The program includes intersession webinars, conference calls, optional in-person activities, and individual leadership capstone projects with guidance from experienced AAP faculty leaders.
As an EC leader, you will serve as a faculty presenter, a faculty coach and a faculty mentor.
Faculty presenter: As an EC faculty member in the program, you will partner with a senior faculty member to develop 1-2 virtual sessions that will be presented to ECLA participants. Examples of topics presented include: graceful self-promotion, building and leading effective teams, negotiating essentials, change management, and giving/receiving effective feedback. Upon selection, your topic preferences will be gathered and pairings will be made that best align with your interests.
Coach and Mentor: Beyond your faculty teaching role, you will also serve as a mentor and coach for a specific group of program participants. You will again partner with a senior faculty member to serve as a faculty team supporting the individualized leadership development of a group of participants. Together, you will use mentorship and coaching skills to engage with your assigned participants on quarterly conference calls to advance the participants' work on their individual leadership projects and to address leadership challenges associated with this project work. You will also provide individual mentoring and coaching to the participants in your coaching group to discuss issues related to their career goals as a leader. Faculty training on coaching skills will be provided to support your own development and further ensure the success of the program.
Compensation: Faculty will be compensated $1,000 for their role in the program, broken into 2 installments of $500 per year.
If interested, please complete and submit the application below. Applicants must be an active member of the AAP for the full duration of the program.
In alignment with the AAP Equity Agenda, the SOECP is committed to celebrating the work of members from groups underrepresented in medicine. We encourage nominations for diverse candidates in terms of race, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, subspecialty, practice location, and/or national origin.
Please note: The ECLA curriculum is designed to optimize participants’ education in leadership development over the two-year period. In order to provide the best experience for our participants, active engagement is expected of faculty. Therefore, faculty attendance is required at all ECLA sessions and on every webinar/conference call for your assigned group for the duration of the appointment. You are also required to hold the individual coaching conversations described above.
EXTENDED application deadline is Sunday, November 19, 2023.
Recipients will be notified the week of December 12, 2023.
