COMMITMENT:
Serves on the Pediatrics SOPT Monthly Feature Editorial Board will entail a three-year commitment. The first year of service will be in the Deputy Editor role, followed by the Editor role, and then the Immediate-Past Editor advisory role.
PRINCIPAL ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Review all submissions to the SOPT column, and solicit content for the section.
- Edit manuscripts selected for publication in an iterative process with the author and Editorial Board members
- Work with all members of the SOPT Editorial Board and the Editorial Board Mentor to determine the final publication status of articles. Articles are published three times per year, at a minimum.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely records of all manuscripts received.
- Ensure that authors and reviewers receive appropriate and timely correspondence regarding receipt, acceptance/rejection status, conflict of interest, copyright ownership, readiness for publication, and required review timeframes.
- Collaborate with other SOPT Editorial Board members to lead and organize the Annual Advocacy Essay competition
- Organize, plan, attend, and help lead writing workshops at the annual AAP National Conference and Exhibition
- Work with the SOPT Executive Chair of Communications and other specialists who assist the Editorial Board of Pediatrics to publicize the section
- Serve as liaison between SOPT section and AAP Editorial Board Mentor regarding the planning and development of the section.
EXPERIENCE:
The applicant must be a pediatric trainee, defined as a student having matched into a pediatrics residency, a current resident in pediatrics, or fellow in a pediatric subspecialty. The applicant must remain a trainee for at least half of their three year term on the Editorial Board. Prior editorial experience and/or a history of publications related to medical humanities is required.
ABILITIES:
Ability to organize and manage a recurrent column that will cover wide topics. Detail- and deadline-oriented. Ability to work effectively with people at all levels, and develop a consensus amidst diverse opinions. Computer literate with excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills. Ability to demonstrate effective writing and editing skills.
