The purpose of the Section on Pediatric Trainees Leading Example for Aspiring Pediatricians (LEAP) Award is to honor the work of trainee mentors, especially those who have helped trainees discover their voices as advocates for child health and physician wellness.
The award is presented to an Academy member who has promoted advocacy in one or more of the following ways:
- Served as an advisor on trainee advocacy projects or initiatives
- Led educational sessions to build capacity within trainees to be advocates for child health and/or physician wellness
- Worked with trainees to implement an initiative or project that brought about a positive impact on children’s health in a school, institution, community, or through public policy
- Empowered trainees to demonstrate a consistent commitment to child health advocacy in their school, program, and community through regular engagement with local, state, or national policymakers, community partnerships, their local AAP chapter, and/or local institutions
Examples of awardee accomplishments may include:
- Serving as a mentor for the chairs of the SOPT Advocacy Campaign, including providing guidance on campaign structure, goals, and evaluation
- Advising trainee leads on the building of organizational protocol within a practice/institution that improves involvement in advocacy initiatives or advocacy education for trainees and/or hospital staff
- Empowering trainees to establish successful community advocacy-related partnerships to improve outcomes for families of diverse backgrounds
