The Tri-State Leadership Institute is designed to foster the professional and personal leadership development of new directors, assistant directors, counseling coordinators, and tutoring coordinators. It also would benefit those who wish to strengthen their leadership skills and share strategies with their colleagues. Although participation is not restricted, the targeted population for this institute is faculty and staff from the opportunity programs in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Nominations will be sought from the program heads in each state, the executive boards of the constituent organization in the three states, the executive board members of Tri-State and the individual members of opportunity programs. In addition, faculty and staff members from the opportunity programs may self-nominate.

The Leadership Institute is an intensive professional development experience and can only accommodate a limited number of participants. Candidates must complete an application and provide a letter of support from their director, or their dean, or provost indicating institutional support for their participation, be committed to participate in the entire institute and conference.

Why Join the Leadership Institute?

Opportunity programs transcend the traditional boundaries across student life, enrollment management, academic affairs and the administrative/business areas of institutions.  In addition, due to the increased level of accountability exhibited by various external funding and governmental agencies, programs must address accountability demands not usually required of other line offices at their institutions. Often opportunity program staffing patterns are limited by funding and as a result all staff must function at very high levels of professionalism and personal commitment. While the program director has the titular leadership position, the effectiveness of programs and the professional development and advancement of individual staff requires a broader more inclusive definition of leadership. In this vein the Tri-State Leadership Institute invites application from new directors, assistant directors, counseling coordinators, and tutoring coordinators. This position must develop close working relationships with every office that affects the Opportunity Program, and where feasible, provide institution-wide leadership in the support of overall undergraduate educational development

Institute Description

The Institute participants will be expected to develop strategies and finally engage in the assessment and re-assessment of the impact of their work on the program and college. Through a series of discussions, readings, personal reflection and team projects the participants will systematically examine questions and issues related to opportunity program leadership challenges.

The tentative agenda for the institute:

SATURDAY April 13, 2019 – Focus on Self

2:00 – 6:30 pm        Introduction and personal/team development exercises

  • Overview of Leadership Institute
  • Icebreaker Introductions (Appreciative interview/Introductions)
  • Meet groups and mentors
  • What makes a good leader/manager – discussion
  • What makes a good opportunity program leader? – exercise discussion
  • Developing your leadership vison and mindset (Mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence exercises)
  • Introduction - Team Case Study Assignments (Explanations & Distribution) groups work with mentors

7:00              Dinner

SUNDAY April 14, 2019 - Focus on the Organization/Institution

Noon -1:30    Embedding Your Program into the Fabric of the Institution

  • Frames of your organization/institution
  • Aligning your program to the institutional mission and goals
  • Understanding the formal organization structure and informal structures and networks necessary to get things done
  • The difference between educational opportunity programs and affirmative action admissions programs: Do opportunity programs provide the solution for higher education?
  • Building program assets, allies and good will

1:30 – 2:30 – Working Lunch

2:30 – 3:30    Leading and being a member of a High Performance Teams

2:45 – 3:30    Becoming an information driven leader

4:00 – 5:30    Group work with mentors

Schedule will be adapted to accommodate potential private Question and Answer sessions with conference keynote Speakers

Participants accepted to the Tri-State Leadership Institute will be asked to remit a fee of $300.00 in addition to the conference fee. (See the Tri State Conference Registration page)
