Organization of the Conference

This conference has been designed so that you may have the best possible and most productive Tri-State experience focusing on the theme, "Creating New Futures by Educating and Liberating for Life in an Era of Change". The conference will unfold through a series of keynote, plenary and workshop sessions aligned with the program strands listed below.  Each of the workshop sessions will feature an important speaker or speakers who are experts in their field.

You are invited to submit proposals for workshops that will illuminate one of the program stands.  Each workshop on the program will be keyed to a particular theme. We are looking for proposals that are innovative, creative and that focus on the emerging trends in higher education and the changing demographics and attitudes of the students that we serve.

Program Strands [Sub-Themes]

A.   Evidence-Based Practices – What works? Includes program practices, initiatives, components that have demonstrated effectiveness and results at improving opportunity program student access, persistence and success. Including (but not limited to academic advisement, counseling, learning assistance/tutoring, summer programs, etc.) Preference will be given to presentations that include the theoretical foundation of the practice and documented outcomes.

B.    New/Emerging Practices – Opportunity programs have a history of innovation and developing initiatives before they are recognized or adopted by the larger host institution. This strand is seeking presentations that include new innovative initiatives that programs are developing or considering that have improved outcomes for the diverse student bodies that opportunity programs serve. Examples include: What are programs doing to reach and support the new generation of students? What are programs doing to support older students returning to college? Using social media as an outreach and/or advising tool.

C.    Leadership & Management – Effective management strategies of one managing one or more Opportunity, TRIO, EOC or Retention Programs.

D.    STEM/STEAM Students - Strategies for increasing the numbers of students in STEM/STEAM majors and careers.

E.    Strategies for improving Educational Opportunity Centers, including incorporation of educational and information technologies, college preparation, career and vocational training, and ESOL instruction

F.    Program assessment and evaluation: Including student outcomes assessment, program audits and the CAS Standards for federal TRIO and state Opportunity/First Generation College Student Programs

G.    Taking the next step – Pursing a doctorate? What strategies do you utilize to finish the EdD/PhD, getting published, maintain life balance while pursuing the doctorate.

H.    Student Recruitment Strategies – Innovative and Effective Strategies: Has your program experienced an enrollment decline as of late? Are you using the most effective recruitment strategies to recruit a diverse student population in a competitive market? Is your program largely focused on the recruitment of traditional aged students? Are you maximizing the usage of technology and various social media platforms to reach a broader audience of potential students? Are you incorporating your students as part of your program’s interview or review process? Discussions and presentations should be centered around how programs can more effectively manage their recruitment efforts in an era of competition and change.

I.     Knowledge of Self - Sessions that address individual growth, self-care, self-esteem, creativity, working with students with disabilities, spiritual growth, etc.
