The program provides participants between the ages of 18 and 35 with the opportunity to learn about the fire service and emergency medical services response in a safe, controlled, and educational environment. Participants are able to engage in real fire service activities under the guidance of experienced Austin Fire Department (AFD) firefighters. The program is designed to give individuals a glimpse into what a cadet academy may be like and a first-hand feel for a possible career in the fire service.
Pass the Torch consists of various Saturday sessions (expection is to meet twice a month) and is held at the City of Austin's Public Safety Training Campus in southeast Austin. At these sessions, participants are able to engage in real fire service practices and activities.
A Pass The Torch applicant must be able to pass a criminal background investigation.
Pass The Torch is a class designed to help you prepare for our next hiring process. Being accepted into this program does not garauntee that you will be accepted as a cadet.
