Graduate Travel Awards: Schulich School of Music Guidelines

The GREAT Awards are allocated to support travel for research, conference presentations (or performance in Music), field research, archival research and collaborative research outside the university.

The Mobility Awards are allocated to students traveling internationally for research, field work, learning about methodologies or research techniques, but not for conference travel.

Eligibility:

  • Graduate students who are presenting their own work at a conference or who have been invited to perform in a workshop, semi-final or final round of a competition, or who are travelling to do research in support of their degree requirements are eligible to apply for faculty travel support. 
  • All Research Master’s or Doctoral students in good standing, registered full-time, and NOT in time limitation or in thesis evaluation.
  • Students must meet the eligibility criteria at the time of travel and when the award is paid.
  • If the award is granted, you will receive 75% of the amount requested in your budget up to $500 for continental travel and $800 for intercontinental travel.
  • Applicants must also apply for travel funding from other available sources (such as the AMS, http://www.ams-net.org/grants/ , SMT, http://societymusictheory.org/grants/travel , or Canada Council, http://www.canadacouncil.ca/grants/music/qc127245459646718750.htm). Students should obtain funding from their supervisors when possible.  It is expected that Faculty support will be requested only when no other funds are available.
  • Successful applicants will normally be awarded a Graduate Travel Award only once per academic year (September 1 – August 31). Exceptionally, applicants may receive an award from more than one fund, but preference will be for applicants who have not received any funding during the academic year.

Application Process:

  • Students should apply when they submit their application to the event. Please do not wait until you have been accepted. Proof of acceptance will be required before the money will be issued. It will be released in the form of a scholarship.
  • Recipients of travel support must also submit a brief report to the Dean’s Office within 2 months of returning from the event. (dean.music@mcgill.ca)

Selection Criteria:

  • Applications for travel funding will be reviewed by the Department Chair and Director of Graduate Studies. 
  • Successful applicants will normally be awarded a Graduate Travel Award only once per academic year (September 1 – August 31). Exceptionally, applicants may receive an award from more than one fund, but preference will be for applicants who have not received any funding during the academic year.
  • Funds will be distributed evenly across the year, and are generally not intended for summer programs.
  • Awards will be made based on merit and availability of funds. Preference in the selection process will be given to Doctoral Students, then Master’s Students.
  • Postdoctoral applications will only be considered on recommendation of the Department Chair and only in very exceptional circumstances.
